Today in History: October 21, 1978 -The Referee Who Played "The Silent Game"

On this day, English football witnessed one of the most bizarre refereeing performances ever seen. Sunderland faced off against Millwall in a second-division match that should have been a standard weekend game.

Instead, the referee, Mr. Richardson, stole the spotlight by refusing to speak to the players in a display that left everyone confused.

The trouble started during the match when Millwall scored a goal that seemed clearly offside. The linesman raised his flag to signal the offense, but the ref ignored him and allowed the goal to stand anyway. Naturally, the Sunderland players were furious. Player Tommy Docherty walked up to the referee and politely asked why he had not checked in with his linesman before making the call.

Rather than explaining his decision, Mr. Richardson gave a strange answer. He told Docherty not to worry about it now and invited him to come to the referee’s room at half-time so they could discuss it properly.

Docherty took him up on the offer. During the half-time break, he walked over to the referee’s room to get an explanation. But when Docherty tried to talk to him, Mr. Richardson changed his mind completely. He refused to say a single word and told Docherty to come back after the full-time whistle instead.

When the match finally ended, Docherty knocked on the door one last time, expecting to finally get some answers. Incredible as it sounds, Mr. Richardson still refused to talk to him.

To make things even worse, the referee then pulled out his yellow card and booked Docherty simply for asking him to honor his own invitation. It remains one of the most ridiculous refereeing stories in English football history.
